AAA likes idea of Gainesville-Atlanta commuter rail

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - A top official with AAA Auto Club South likes the idea of a Gainesville-Atlanta commuter rail line.

Ted Allred, Vice President, Branch Operations, says its appears the proposed Gainesville-Atlanta line and the Atlanta-Athens line would "offer the most promise" as opposed to an Atlanta-Macon line which has also been proposed.

"I think because of the (University of Georgia's) location and the number of folks who commute on a daily basis," Allred said.

The state is considering all three, with more emphasis, right now, being put on the lines connecting Atlanta with Macon and Athens.

Allred also said AAA does not have a position of the question of driver's licenses for illegal immigrants, an issue which has resurfaced in Georgia in recent months.

"I really believe...and, I believe the position of the club will be that that is a matter that should be handled by the government," he added.

Allred comments on this weekend's Northeast Georgia This Week, which airs Sunday and Monday on WDUN NEWS TALK 550.
