New moves aimed at 'legalizing' illegal immigrants

By by Ken Stanford
WASHINGTON - There are renewed moves to relax some of this country's immigration controls and legalize some of the nearly ten million illegal immigrants living in this country.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday that Democrats and Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee met Wednesday to discuss ending mandatory deportation of some long-time immigrants convicted of crimes.

At the same time, a coalition of pro-immigration groups launched a nationwide campaign to collect one million postcard petitions to send to Congress and the president calling for legal status for millions of "illegals."

Meanwhile, President Bush this week again endorsed the idea.
