Hall commission race heating up

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Charges and counter-charges are flying in the hotly contested race for the South Hall commission post which will be decided in a runoff next Tuesday.

Incumbent Brenda Branch says her opponent, Deborah Lynn, is using a fake poll to spread false information.

"This is a 'push poll' which is a ploy that is used to sway voters against a candidate," Branch said.

A press release from the her campaign alleges that when people are called by Lynn's poll and indicate their support for Branch, they are then asked if they would be influenced to know that Branch does not support impact fees.

A spokesman for Lynn denies the accusation, while criticzing Branch for an ad alleging Lynn would be a puppet of other members of the commission. That's apparently a reference to money donated to Lynn's campaign by Hall County Commissioner Roger Cole and the wife of commission chairman Gary Gibbs. Gibbs and Cole have been at odds with Branch on a number of key issues facing the commission.

The winner of the Republican primary runoff Tuesday will face Democrat Stephen White in November.
