Third year of nursing pilot grant program

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Four area colleges' nursing programs will be receiving a total of $100,000 this year as a result of a grant written by Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

For the third year, the Medical Center submitted the grant to the Georgia Student Finance Commission with letters of support from four nursing schools in the northeast Georgia area: Brenau University, North Georgia College & State University, Piedmont College and Medical College of Georgia (Athens campus).

The money will go directly to the colleges and will be allocated to assist students based on financial need. To date, this grant has awarded $190,325 to 61 students in nursing programs at the four schools. This year, 30 junior and senior nursing students will benefit from the grant money. As part of this service-cancelable loan, each student has signed an agreement with Northeast Georgia Health System, Inc. stating that they will work for NGHS for one year upon graduation.

"This grant helps nursing students to fully concentrate on their studies without having to spend time working to support themselves," says Anita Scott, academic liaison for NGHS.

"Receiving financial aid through this grant has assisted in meeting my tuition needs and easing the burden of financing my college education," says Melissa Holcomb, nursing student and two-year recipient of the scholarship. "It has also prepared me to serve the community in which I live."

Many contributed to the realization of this grant, says Deb Bailey, RN, BSN, MSN, director of Governmental Affairs at NGHS. "It really was a collaborative effort among the Medical Center, the schools and the State."

Pending availability of financial allocations at the state level in 2004, Northeast Georgia Health System plans to seek funds again next year.
