War Eagles hold off furious Vikings rally

By By Jeff Hart
RABBITTOWN - The first battle of the Thomas Family is over.

Devon Thomas and the Chestatee War Eagles held off cousin Kevin Thomas and East Hall to take a wild 14-12 win in Region 7-AAA softball action Thursday.

It was the first-ever meeting between the family members as coaches at the high school level.

"It was a little strange at first, but once it got started it was like any other game," Devon said. "I'm glad we got the first one out of the way, but it was a lot of fun."

Chestatee (11-5, 4-1) jumped to a 10-1 lead in the second inning and looked to be putting the mercy rule in play for the third straight game.

But East Hall (6-9, 2-4) came storming back behind the hitting of Tori White, who went 4-for-5 with 7 RBIs.

"She was amazing," Devon Thomas said. "She hit everything we pitched to her. They brought their A-game and were a scrappy bunch. We're lucky to come out with a win."

Sara Applegarth got the win for Chestatee. Brooke Puckett got the save pitching the final three innings. Nicole Clay took the loss for East Hall.

The Vikings tied the game once but could never get the lead.

Applegarth led Chestatee with three hits and two RBIs. Taylor Burke, Puckett and Chelsey Hatfield each had two hits for the War Eagles.

Mallory McCord and each Carrie Brookshire had a hit and two RBIs while Meg Shuler and Greta Lang Henry had one hit each for Chestatee.

It doesn't get any easier for Chestatee. The War Eagles play host to North Hall Tuesday. Thomas was the coach at North Hall before moving to Chestatee.

The Lady Trojans are rolling this year and are undefeated so far in Region 7-AAA play at 5-0. They beat Johnson 5-1 Thursday. Pickens County is also undefeated in the region.
