Elephants trample East Hall

By By Jeff Hart
GAINESVILLE - For about two minutes Friday night it looked like the Gainesville High football would have a game on its hands against East Hall.

An onside kick and then a 30-yard strike from Vikings' quarterback Lee Coleman to Marquez Jackson just moments into the usually bitter cross-town rivalry gave East Hall a 7-0 lead.

It was all Gainesville after that.

Cedric Langston scored the first of two touchdowns less than two minutes later to tie the game and the Red Elephants continued to roll from there en route to a 56-7 blowout of the Vikings at East Hall Stadium.

After a Carlos Cobb interception on East Hall's next possession, Joseph Maheffey scored to make it 13-7 and then Gainesville put the game away when Langston scored again just before the end of the first quarter.

Gainesville (2-0, 2-0 in Region 7-AAA) piled 337 yards of offense, 275 rushing. Langston led six Elephant runners with 60 yards and the two touchdowns. Maheffey finished with 47 yards.

East Hall (1-1, 1-1) never got untracked after the opening few plays. THe Vikings fumbled four times, losing two and to make matters worse starting running back Jamie Evans went down in the first half with an apparent knee injury.

Gainesville will take a week off before playing host to Chestatee on Sept. 26th. East Hall will travel to North Hall next week in big rivalry game.
