Report: Gainesville work release center could close

GAINESVILLE - Published reports say a state work release center in Gainesville could be closed under cost-cutting measures begin considered by the state Department of Corrections. <br> <br> The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Wednesday that centers for crimianl offenders who hold down full-time jobs, such as the ones in Gainesville and in Cobb and Clayton counties, could be closed as the department considers ways to reduce spending. <br> <br> The paper says that was among the budget-cutting options presented to Governor Perdue this week as he tries to balance the state&#39;s $16 billion dollar budget in the midst of an economic downturn. <br> <br> Monday was the deadline for state department heads to submit propsed budget cuts.
