One Wal-Mart okayed, another discussed

By by Ken Stanford
UNDATED - The Forsyth County Planning Commission Tuesday night approved revised plans for a Wal-Mart Supercenter next to subdivisions whose residents oppose the decision. At the same time, a neighborhood meeting was held in North Hall to discuss plans for a Wal-Mart in that area.

In Cumming, Forsyth Planning Commissioner Pam Livesay recommended approval of the giant store at Tuesday night's meeting.

Residents of the Laurel Springs and Bridle Ridge subdivisions oppose the measure. Homes in the subdivisions range upward from $250,000.

A resident of Bridle Ridge subdivision and a leader of the opposition -- Robert Slaughter -- is vowing to appeal the decision to the county Zoning Board of Appeal.

The project is planned on a site that already is zoned commercial so the Planning Commission could not reject it outright.

Wal-Mart has agreed, however, not to build a service station on the site as first planned.

Livesay did impose limitations on store hours from 6:00-midnight until July 31, 2007, or until the road is widened from two lanes to four or five..

The North Hall Wal-Mart proposal is scheduled to be heard by the Hall County Planning Commission November 15. It is planned on a site at Southers Road and Thompson Bridge Road.
