AVONDALE ESTATES - City officials in Avondale Estates have rejected Wal-Mart's request to build a SuperCenter on the site of the former Avondale Mall - in a case much like the one in Gainesville that came to a head last week.
Commissioners in the central DeKalb County city of 2,600 cast a unanimous vote Monday night against the retail giant's plan. About 250 people attended the meeting.
City Commissioner Sandra Varian says -- quote -- ``Wal-Mart doesn't fit in our little city.''
Last month the city's planning and zoning board had recommended the annexation. One of those conditions was that the store not operate 24 hours a day.
Wal-Mart spokesman Glen Wilkins says company officials have NOT decided what to do next.
Last week in Gainesville, Hall County commissioners rejected plans for a similar store in North Hall.
