Piedmont offers chance to begin college career early

By by Ken Stanford
DEMOREST - Piedmont College is offering high school students a "jump start" on their college careers.

Beginning this summer semester, new high school graduates and rising seniors can enroll in the Jump Start program to get started right away on their bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree and save money in the process with discounted summer tuition.

Jem Clement, Piedmont's Dean of Students, said the Jump Start program includes three for-credit courses from the college's catalog. This summer's courses include micro economics, the history of the U.S. since 1912, as well as a seminar on college life that teaches study skills, time management, note taking, and test taking skills.

"These are regular college classes, and the Jump Start students will be right alongside our other students," Clement said. "They will also have to meet our standard admissions requirements, but we have created a
streamlined application process."

Clement said the Jump Start program is
open to all students, no matter which college they intend to enroll in later. Students can commute to class or live on campus, Clement said.

"While they are students at Piedmont, they can also take advantage of on-campus events, off-campus trips and activities, and the use of the college fitness center," he said.

"This program is open to current high school seniors and to juniors who will graduate in 2005 who want to get an early start on their college careers," Clement said. "But it is especially good for students who may be a little nervous about going away to college for the first time or students who want to learn more about what majors are right for them."
