EHHS's Bill Sloan named state 'principal of the year'

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - The longtime principal of East Hall High School has been named principal of the year by the Georgia Association of Secondary Principals.

"I was shocked, surprised, and very humbled," Bill Sloan said Tuesday.

Dr. Sloan has spent 36 years in the Hall County School System and has been East Hall principal the last 16 years. One more year, he says, and he'll probably retire.

But, he says he has not tired of his work.

"I still enjoy my job," Sloan said. "I like to get up every morning and come to work."

He has spent his whole career in the Hall County School System.

"I started when I was 22-years-old at South Hall High School (now Johnson High)," Sloan said. "I taught and was a coach and was an assistant principal."

Sloan, whose wife retired last year after more than 30 years at Oakwood Elementary School, says he will probably look seriously at retiring, himself, after another year or so.

But, for now, while still overseeing the day-to-day operations at East Hall and making plans for yet another trip to Macon as another East Hall basketball team enters the semi-finals of the state playoffs, Dr. Sloan is making plans for a trip to Washington this fall.

That's when he'll attend a banquet for all 50 state "principal of the year" winners and learn if he is the national winner.
