Major bridge reconstruction project on tap

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - The Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors was briefed Thursday on plans for a major bridge maintenance project planned for one of the main routes in and out of Gainesville.

The state Department of Transportationi's Teri Pope said the work is expected to begin in late May or early June on the Queen City Parkway bridge.

The project is expected to be finished by next January. Two of the four lanes will remain closed at all times, starting with the northbound bridge, Pope said.

She said these will be "24-hour" work zone and that once the northbound bridge is closed it will not be reopened until the work to upgrade it is finished. Work will then begin on the southbound bridge. While one bridge is closed, the other will be used for two-way traffic, a single lane in each direction.

The work will involve replacing the bridge deck (driving surface and sidewalks) and handrails at a cost of $2.2 million.
