Fire destroys 5 homes, damages 17 others in Forsyth

UNDATED - A house fire in the Manchester Courts Subdivision in Cumming Sunday spread to other houses.

Forysth County Fire Chief Danny Bowman Sunday said it was a tough fight. "We lost 5 structures and had 17 damaged and we had seven firefighters taken to the hospital with dehydration and absolute exhaustion," Bowman said.

Some witnesses say the wind-swept blaze started at a house where someone was using a barbecue grill on a screened in portch.

Three seperate fires broke out within ten minutes of each other in DeKalb. No injuries were reported in any of those fires, and the causes are still under investigation.

In Gwinnett County, fire crews fought a small brush fire on U.S. Highway 78. And another brush fire in Newton County broke out near some homes, but firefighters prevented damage to any property.

The National Weather Service says dry and cool weather is expected to continue in the area until Wednesday, when there is a chance of rain.
