UNDATED - Governor Sonny Perdue and stte Schools Superintendent Kathy Cox Monday presented five Georgia schools - including East Hall High - with trophies highlighting their marked improvement in SAT scores.
Governor Perdue last year initiated the statewide competition as part of an overall effort to raise Georgia's scores.
The Governor's Cup challenge is based on high school athletic regions and classifications previously assigned by the Georgia High School Association.
East Hall and the other schools - one for each of the state high school classifications - were awarded a Governor's Cup trophy and a $2,000 grant in a fly-around of the state today by Perdue and State Schools Superintendment Kathy Cox.
"I am immensely proud that we are able to celebrate these students, teachers and parents for their academic achievement," said Governor Sonny Perdue. "These schools have demonstrated what I have believed all along, that our students, when challenged, will perform."
The schools are:
Portal Middle High School, Bulloch County, Class A
Coosa High School, Floyd County, Class AA
East Hall High School, Hall County, Class AAA
Hepzibah High School, Richmond County, Class AAAA
Northview High School, Fulton County, Class AAAAA
A Regional Champion Trophy and $1000 grant were also awarded to the 40 high schools that have the largest numerical improvement in SAT scores in their region.
Turner Broadcasting is a partner in the Governor's Cup, providing all grants and trophies to the winning schools. Last year, Turner provided all Georgia high schools with a SAT prep CD-ROM.
