Gainesville gas prices still falling

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Gasoline prices in Gainesville have suddenly plunged to pre-Katrina levels - and some analysts say they could go even lower.

A spot check of prices recently found regular, unleaded at or just below $2.35.

That's about where they were in early August, when the latest spike began, culminating at around $3.50 a month later - in the days just after Hurricane Katrina.

Clipper Petroleum General Manager Steve Hall predicted a month ago that prices would start to come down - and some analysts are now predicting $2.10 to $2.20 a gallon over the next few weeks.

Gainesville area price timeline for average regular, unleaded:

Mar. 17 - $2.00
Apr. 7 - $2.20
Apr. 25 - $2.10
Aug. 5 - $2.25
Aug. 7 - $2.35
Aug. 10 - $2.40
Sep. 1 - $3.19 (morning)
Sep. 1 - $3.49
Nov. 4 - $2.35
