GAINESVILLE - Because of new federal legislation taking effect January first, Hall Area Transit will make several changes to its charter bus service. Under the new guidelines, public transit agencies are essentially required to ask local charter companies for permission to continue providing charters.

Because of new federal legislation which takes effect January 1, 2006, Hall Area Transit will make several changes to its charter bus service. Under the new federal legislation, public transit agencies are essentially required to ask local charter companies for permission to continue providing charters. Hall Area Transit's General Manager,
Janice Crow, contacted local company officials who said they did not want HAT to compete with them for charter bus service.

There are some exceptions to the legislation. According to Crow, Hall Area Transit can still provide transportation for special requests involving a large number of disabled or senior citizens. In addition, a charter bus company can subcontract with HAT to assist them with a project that requires wheelchair accessibility or some other service
they may be equipped to provide.
