City Council looks for historic buildings

By by Jerry Gunn
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City Council wants to know where the city's historic buildings are and what shape they are in.

Very soon consultants will be looking for Gainesville's past.

The Jaeger Company has the go ahead to conduct a historic resource reconnaissance survey, a step toward obtaining historic preservation grants.

Mayor Protem Mark Musselwhite said Council can act to save remaining landmark buildings.

"There are issues we need to know about to make sure and what criteria there are to determine if it is in danger," Musselwhite said.

The survey, set to cost an estimated $5,000, will provide Council with a historic resource assessment plus help Gainesville achieve Certified Local Government status.
