Half-million dollar gift made to medical center

GAINESVILLE - Woody Stewart, chairman of The Northeast Georgia Medical Center Foundation's Development Council, recently announced that a Signature Gift has been made to The Medical Center Foundation in memory of Sam Jones, former Hospital Authority chairman.

The $500,000 donation made by Claribel, Jones' wife, and Sammy, his only son, will name the new cardiac cath observation unit the Sam Jones Cath Observation Unit, which is scheduled to open next week.

The observation unit is located on the first floor of the Outpatient Services Building on Northeast Georgia Medical Center's main campus. The Cardiac Services department will use the unit for the preparation and recovery of patients who are having non-emergent outpatient catheterization procedures. The unit will consist of 14 private rooms, each with its own bath and will be staffed from 5 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Patients who previously reported to the Surgery Pavilion for registration for an outpatient catheterization procedure will now report to registration on the ground floor of the Outpatient Services Building for procedure prep.

"We truly appreciate the Jones family's decision to publicly memorialize a great husband, father and community servant," says Stewart. "As chairman of the Hospital Authority for a number of years, it is obvious that the medical community was important to Jones. Naming the cath observation unit in his memory will be a lasting legacy of his service to the Medical Center and our community."

Jones served on the Hospital Authority from 1973 to 1979 and served as its chairman from 1974 to 1979. He spent his career with Johnson & Johnson and passed away in 2003. Mrs. Jones was a dedicated volunteer at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in the Auxiliary's gift shop until 1979.
