United Way honors retiring chief, Anna Gines

By Jerry Gunn
GAINESVILLE - Friends and associates recalled Anna Gines' sixteen years of United Way leadership at her retirement reception Tuesday at Brenau University in Gainesville.

As President and Chief Professional Officer Anna Gines led United Way of Hall County from a two employee office to an eleven employee state of the art agency.

"This community is full of so many wonderful people and that was really the most rewarding part of what I did," she said.

A new Chief Professional Officer, Tom Jones from Brunswick, arrives in Gainesville April first.

United Way Board Chairman Tom Mickle said his agency will miss a familiar face.

It was Gines' familiar face that first appeared in 1989 from Savannah and led United Way's annual fund raising campaign from a goal of $860,000 to its current level of almost two million dollars.

"She's been able to take charge and work with the staff and get a lot of things done in the community using the United Way," Mickle said.

The United Way expanded to include not only partner agencies but also the funded programs of 2-1-1 and Hands on Hall.

In 1999, a permanent home for the agency was procured when the current location at 527 Oak Street was purchased.
