CLERMONT - A memorial service is planned Wednesday for a longtime teacher at Wauka Mountain Elementary School who died Sunday following an extended illness.

Sheryl Askew, 57, taught school for 20 years - 14 of them at Wauka Mountain where she was teacher of the year in 1996 and again 1997.

Askew annually organized and presented a Christmas program to the businesses and organizations that supported Wauka Mountain Elementary School.

Askew had worked with ther school's annual Chicken Pie Supper since 1965. The event began in 1925 and the purpose has remained the same: bake chicken pie to raise money for the school.

"It was a way back then to raise money and with so many chickens in this area that was the direction to go in," Askew said at the 2002 supper.

The memorial service will be at 4:00 Wednesday at Concord Baptist Church
