ATALNTA - The White County High School student, who created a lingering controversy earlier this year when she tried to start a Gay-Straight Alliance at the school, was honored over the weekend by a human rights group.

Kerry Pacer was recognized by the Georgia Chapter of the Human Rights Campaign at its annual meeting in Atlanta Saturday night.

After the initial controversy, Pacer led the formation of a club known as PRIDE - for Peers Rising in Diverse Education.

The Human Rights Campaign is the country'slargest gay rights organization. It's Web site says it works for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equal rights.

Pacer's efforts have prompted demonsrations in White County and heated exchanges at packed school board meetings.
