GHCC to host Economic Development Seminar

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Three weeks after hosting several state and international officials in a session aimed at promoting exports, the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce is taking the effort a step further with an export development seminar next month in Gainesville.

The July 14 session is open to any business in the export business and thinking about getting into it.

When the state's TradeRoots program stopped in town June 9, trade specialist Renee Rosenheck said Gainesville could do a lot more exporting.

"That's why we brought this opportunity and this seminar to Gainesville to provide more information to companies about the resources that are available and how we can help them," Rosenheck said.
Statewide last year exports added up to $19.6-billion in goods alone.

Rosenheck said about 95 percent of the world's consumers live outside the United States, the U.S. has only five percent of the world's consumers.

"Two thirds of the world's purchasing power is also outside of the United States," Rosenheck added. "So as much business as you're doing here locally, there's a world of opportunity outside of Gainesville and outside of Georgia."

South American trade Representatives attending the seminar said they were interested in poultry related exports.

Mary Lou Lathrope, U.S. Commerce Department Advisor from Chile, said Gainesville poultry is known in her country.

"And we know of your food processing equipment; that is a very good prospect in Chile," Lathrope said.

Brazilian Commerce Department Advisor Igly Serafim said her country is a large poultry exporter. "We're looking for new equipment that can increase productivity."

Serafim added that Georgia exports to Brazil are increasing.

Last year U.S. exports to Brazil added up to $14-billion according to Commerce Department figures.

The July 14 seminar is open to all Georgia companies who currently export or wish to develop their export business, and to the financial institutions serving them. A limited number of individual meetings with the speakers will be held in the afternoon.

Seminar topic discussion includes:

- Choosing the right product, market and representative
- Negotiating a representation agreement
- Logistics
- Planning for long-term growth and profitability

Companies interested in having individual meetings must make appointments prior to the date of the seminar. Cost is $45 per person. Registration for the seminar begins at 8:30 a.m. The program is 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon. For seminar information, contact Tiana Hardin at the Georgia Department of Economic Development, 404-962-4128.
