Hall hosts conference on treating young trauma victims

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Hall County Fire Services is hosting a two-day conference in Gainesville this week on how to effectively care for young children who are trauma victims.

About 150 providers are expected to attend the Emergency Medical Services for Children conference, according to Hall County Fire Marshal Scott Cagle. They include nurses and other hospital workers and EMS personnel.

"You take care of them (children) a whole lot differently than adults," Cagle said. He listed as a couple of examples the administration of drugs in the proper dose for the age of the child and treatment of breathing problems in youngsters, especially when medical devices have to be inserted into the airway.

Topics to be covered include "pediatric burns, newborn emergencies and bridging the culture gap," according to Cagle.

The conference, which ends Thursday, is being held at the Georgia Mountains Center.
