City council gets memento of Tour de Georgia

By by Jerry Gunn
GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville City Council now has its very own memento of the start of Stage 5 of this year's Tour de Georgia.

The president of the Gainesville-Hall County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Helen Fincher, presented the council with a picture of the event as it unfolded downtown April 23.

According to just released Tour de Georgia figures, other cities had more spectators attend their part of the event but Fincher said 9,000 people was about all that would fit into the downtown Gainesville square.

"How many people can you fill and put into the downtown square?," Fincher asked. "Ours did not include anyone who may have been on the route."

Fincher said she will meet with Tour de Georgia officials next month about another Saturday morning on the square start for a race segment next year.

Tour de Georgia is expected to make decision in September.

Fincher said photo shows the moment the bike racers started Day Five of their trek through Northeast Georgia.
