GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Fire Station #2, the oldest in the city, is about to undergo a major renovation, with the emphasis on "creature comforts."

Chief Dick Taylor says its long been needed by the men and women who spend "every third day there, so they spend a third of there lives in these fire houses, so they need to be up to date."

Chief Taylor says kitchen, bath, and sleeping areas will be completely renovated and he would like to have the $90,000 project finished by next summer.

"It's truly a step into history when you walk through the door," Taylor said the the station , which was built in the 1950s. "The building virtually has not been modernized to any extent since then."

Taylor said he hopes to have the work, which will be done in phases, finished by next "spring or summer."
