Library system reports $2.5M in grants

GAINESVILLE - While the Hall County Library System received nearly $2.5 million in grants during the past fiscal year, officials are quick to point out that much of that money simply allows the system to operate.

More than $00,000 of that was in the form of grant money from the state.

This, officials say, pays for professional librarians as staff, library materials, and other essential operating expenses such as utility bills or cleaning services.

The largest piece of the pie came from a special award of $2 million to supplement local Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) dollars in building the new Spout Springs Library.

Earlier this year, the library system received $1,464 for technology from the Gates Foundation. Recently it was announced that the library will receive an additional $18,000 in Gates funds for computers. This will facilitate the replacement of many pieces of outdated equipment.

The library's youth services department was successful in receiving grant funds as well. A $1,750 grant from the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) allowed for a successful Vacation Reading Program. In late summer, the department was awarded an additional $27,045 in LSTA funds for youth materials to supplement the normal materials budget.
