New traffic lights make E.E. Butler an easier ride

GAINESVILLE - A half million dollar state Department of Transportation revamp of traffic signals along Gainesville's E.E. Butler Parkway is expected to make driving through town much safer.

Contract workers were busy last week erecting state of the art traffic lights over Butler from masts instead of hang over it from wires, according to Adrian Niles.

" It will be much more visible, it is a safety factor and also it cleans up the intersection," Niles said.

Niles said the new signals are bigger, more visible, accessible to pedestrians and computer controlled.

"Part of the upgrade is communication cable from one intersection to another intersection where we can move traffic a lot quicker," Niles said.

Niles added that the signals at seven intersections will last much longer, 25 years instead of ten.

When installation is complete, DOT. turns the lights over to the city for maintenance.

Similar installations have been complete for some time along Academy Street near the library and St. Paul United Methodist Church and in the downtown area.
