Who is this Cumming man in the Olympics?

By by Ken Stanford
TORIN, Italy - Charles Ryan Leveille, 22, of Cumming made his Olympics debut Wednesday in the speedskating team pursuit competition, but the U.S. team was eliminated. (See separate story).

According to information posted on the U.S. Olympic team Web site, Leveille, who now lives in Park City, Utah, has been in the sport less than a year - starting last August, and is the youngest member of the U.S. squad. Since then he has won a silver medal at the 2006 U.S. Long Track Championships in the 10,000m and a bronze medal in the U.S. Men's Allround.

"It's been such a whirlwind, it really hasn't hit me yet," he is quoted as saying.

According to the Web site, his sports background includes inline skating (he still holds U.S. record at 1,500 meters) and short track speedskating, and he was a member of the 2005 World Cup team. Leveille found success after switching from short track - a sport in which he broke his back in a crash in 2004 - to long track.
