Last month possibly warmest January on record

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - The National Weather Service says last month was one of the warmest Januarys on record nationwide - and perhaps the warmest ever, and that may have been case in Gainesville based on available records.

For sure, if you check each January back to 1936, except 1996, it was definitely the warmest. Records for 1996 were not immediately available.

The average high in Gainesville last month was 56 degrees; the average low was 38. It got no lower than 28 the whole month, compared with January lows of 3, 16, 19, -8, 9, and 5 from 1936 through 1986.

The average January high for those decades ranged from 47 in 1976 to 52 in both 1946 and 1956.
