Liberty Mutual job cuts planned

GAINESVILLE - Nearly 100 employees at Liberty Mutual in Gainesville have been told they may lose their jobs.

A company spokesman says 70 positions are definitely being eliminated - and possibly up to 95.

"Twenty employees...by year's end and another 70 by the second half of 2007," Glenn Greenberg said Thursday from Boston, where the insurance giant is based. "And, we think we may have some opportunity in the workers' compensation unit that may accommodate some of the folks who will displaced in our policy production unit."

Greenberg says some jobs are being shifted a Liberty Mutual operation in New Hampshire. The Gainesville regional center, which is located on Brown's Bridge Road and serves the southeast, employs 525 people.
