Northern trees not thriving in this southern heat, y'all

GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City Council has learned that trees planted on the downtown square are not doing well because they are not - "southern" trees.

Landscape consultant Mark Fockele told them Thursday the green ash from up north is not hardy enough for Gainesville's climate and needs to be replaced.

"They're not suited for our climate; we've found that out the hard way," Focklele said.

Fockele said another problem is growing space allowed for the downtown trees.

"You can't buy a gallon of milk in a one pint container, you have to know how big the pot is that you're growing the tree in," he said.

Fockele recommended expanding the planting area, improving the soil and putting in trees that can thrive and provide shade.

Council agreed to fund a 20 year master plan for improving on the square trees and foliage.
