Gainesvile rainfall deficit reaches 20+ inches

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville's rainfall deficit for the year reaches a new milestone: 20 inches.

As of Monday morning, it was 20.21 inches.

Two-and-a-half weeks ago, it was 18 inches.

With the prospects of it growing even more, EPD's Carol Couch says its not too late for all of us to take those little steps we've been hearing about to help conserve water.

"Every amount of personal responsibility that people can take now," Couch said. "Could help us very much next year."

State climatologist David Stooksbury says the origin of the drought can be traced to the spring of 2006 when the state went to a "Drought Level One Response."
