Mammoth new pipe organ arrives at Gainesville church

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - A new set of pipes, part of a new pipe organ, is being installed at Grace Episcopal Church in Gainesville - and it's going to take about two months to complete the job.

The organ arrived unassembled a few days ago, in hundreds of boxes and packing crates. There re 2,853 pipes included, ranging in size from 20 feet to as small as a pencil. They are fashioned from wood, "spotted metal," or copper.

Church officials say the organ was built over the last 18 months by Casavant Freres, a Canadian company located in Quebec.

Installation and "voicing" of the organ will take about two months, but visitors to the church's Web site (see link below), will be able to view the program on an "organcam." A live image of the installation will be updated hourly, Monday-Saturday, 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.

Grace is planning a Service of Consecration sometime in January and a Dedicatory Recital in April.
