Water Summit students work on mission statement

GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Hall County students Wednesday began work on a water conservation mission statement at the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce.

During their Water Summit the students were challenged by the experts to come up with methods to conserve water during and after the drought.

Thirteen year old Lauren Wassel from Chestatee Middle School learned that Lake Lanier's level is 1054, near a historic low.

"In the long run we really need all the water and we don't have to use all the water that we do use," she said.

Students also learned that Gainesville/Hall water consumption has to drop to just under 16 million gallons a day.

Public Utilities Director Kelly Randall said that locally each person uses about 180 gallons of water a day.

"That's a lot of water every day, Randall said. "If we each reduced consumption by just one gallon that's 130,000 gallons a day we'd save."

Gainesville Environmental Coordinator Bryan Wiley said the current drought is a wake-up call for conservation now and in the future.

"I think people are worried, I think there is some fear there," Wiley said. "People are calling us and saying they're stockpiling water because of what could happen."
