Gainesville mayor says prayer works

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Mayor Bob Hamrick said Thursday that apparently prayer works.

For the second night in a row, it rained in Gainesville last night, with almost an inch recorded at the airport, just two days after the mayor and others gathered downtown to publicly pray for rain.

Hamrick continued urging water customers to keep up their conservation efforts.

"We're not out of the woods by any means," the Mayor said. "We need to conserve what He's given us already."

Total rainfall was .75 of an inch, the first recorded rainfall in Gaineville since since Oct. 24 when .13 of an inch fell and the biggest single day report since Oct. 23 when the airport recorded .73 of an inch.

But the National Weather Service (NWS) says this week's rain really won't help with drought relief that much. One NWS expert says not evening a "two or three inch" soaking would do much good.

WINDY, COLDER

Meanwhile, as the rains move out, windy, much colder weather is moving in. Strong winds are forecast today with temperatures dropping throughout the day pre-dawn readings of around 60. By late this afternoon the temperature in Gainesville is expected to be in the upper 40s and by tomorrow morning, the upper 20s.

The strong, gusty winds are expected to reach 35-40 miles an hour in most of north Georgia with gusts of up to 55 mph in some mountain areas. The NWS has posted a wind advisory for all of north Georgia for today.
