Property holders look at proposed Cleveland Highway widening

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Landowners and homeowners looked for their property on a big DOT map this Thursday afternoon at Riverbend Elementary School.

They looked to see how the estimated $100-million dollar future widening of Cleveland Highway would affect them between Limestone Parkway and Jim Hood/Nopone Road.

The project would widen U.S.129/SR 11 to a four lane divided highway with construction of new bridges at the Chattahoochee River and the East Fork of the Little River.

Preconstruction Engineer Robert Mahoney there's plenty of time for comments; the project is years away and there's no funding for it yet.

"We're just in the engineering phase, we're basically trying to get comments from the public and we'll take that and work through all the different comments, make a decision and move forward," Mahoney said.

That was the purpose of the late afternoon open house at the school, to discuss the project and gather comments.

Project displays will be also be available at the Georgia DOT district office at 2505 Athens Highway in Gainesville.

Mahoney said there would be impact;homes and businesses would have to relocate.

"With residential displacements depending on which alignment, we're talking about as many as 30, and on commercial properties it could be anywhere from 10 to 15 depending on which option," Mahoney said.

Mahoney added there are two construction options for this project driven by expanded transportation corridor needs.
