Woman hit by car, killed in Banks County

COMMERCE - A woman was killed Wednesday night at Banks Crossing, when she was struck by a car while trying to help a truck driver.

A witness said Romona Frye Burns of Catawba, N.C., was standing on U.S. 441 was trying to help a tractor trailer back in to the roadway. Burns was struck by a car driven by Daphne McDaniel of Maysville, according to Georgia State Patrol Operator Brandon Marcus.

"The pedestrian came to rest...approximately 55 feet from the area of impact," Marcus said.

McDaniel told investigators she saw the truck on the side of the road, but did not see Burns.
