Fires impact Gainesville Police staff

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Police Chief Hooper told City Council Thursday a house fire and a car fire have impacted two of his employees in the past week.

The house fire damaged Sgt. Johnny Ray's home in Jefferson last week.

"It did not destroy it, it is not a total loss," Hooper said. "They're going to be able to repair and occupy it after the first of the year."

The Chief said the department was helping with a clothing drive and a bank account set up for Ray and his family including three children.

Hooper said a front office employee's car burned in the police department parking lot Thursday morning.

VOICE LAPTOPS

Gainesville Police traffic patrol officers will soon voice information into their on board laptops instead of typing it in, using donated new technology.

Chief Hooper told Council ten free "Quick Voice" software packages are coming compliments of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

Hooper said officers will hear the information from the state through a headset for much quicker response.

The software sets, produced by Advanced Public Safety, are valued at nearly $3,500.
