Survival: Amicalola

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
DAWSONVILLE - No, it's not the next installment of popular CBS television series "Survivor," but it could be titled "Survivor: Amicalola."

Do you know how to survive in the wilderness? Every year in northeast Georgia there's a story or two about someone who gets lost while hiking in the mountains.

Now, there's a course coming up shortly after the first of the year to teach campers, hikers and others what do do if they get lost in the wild.

Park rangers at Amicalola Falls State Park will conduct a two-day wilderness survival course February 9-10 to help participants prepare for an emergency in the outdoors.

The course is designed to "prepare anyone who likes to spend time outdoors for the unexpected," according to organizers. Included will be instruction and hands-on training in a variety of topics including shelter building, fire building, and lost prevention.

Cost of the program is $50 (food and lodging not included) and pre-registration is required. For more information call the programming department at 706-265-1969.
