GAINESVILLE - A group of Hall County High School builders calling themselves 'Habitat High' have built a house for a family who needs one just in time for Christmas in Gainesville's Cooley Drive Redevelopment area.
And they're about to start on another one, according to instructor Parke Hargrove.
"We're going to pour the footers next week, hopefully and we're going to start building it January 9th," Hargrove said.
Fourteen students worked on this newly completed 1300 square foot, three bed room house beginning in August in a cooperative effort between Hall County Schools, Habitat for Humanity and the Gainesville Hall County Builders Association.
Seventeen year old David Cody from Chestatee High School expects his experience to pay dividends later.
"If I build a house or even if I don't and somebody else builds it, I'll know if they're doing it right," Cody said.
"It's a real education for the students and we call it 'Habitat High'," Hargrove said. "They're doing a lot of volunteer work for a very good cause and they're learning a lot at the same time."
Hargrove said a rundown mobile home occupied the site of the Habitat house; the new house should be ready soon for its new owner, a single mother with two children.
"In probably another week or so," Hargrove said," As soon as we get the power hooked up and they get the permit to move in."
