Gainesville's In-Between Deli still out front

By by Jerry Gunn
GAINESVILLE - In Gainesville if you buy a sandwich at the "In-Between" Deli on Riverside Drive it's just like getting one if you walked in thirty- four years ago. And, with apologies to TV's Cheers --- it's something of a place "where everybody knows your name" and the people running the place know what you like.

Richard Demore welcomes customers in a style that deli owners Wesley and Susan Gailey started back in 1973.

Demore and his wife Rebecca fill in for the Gaileys when they are away, which is not very often.

"Susan and Wesley are very friendly people, they know their customers and they know basically what they want when they come in the door," she said.

According to the Demores, who have been at the In-Between for years, it is that kind of friendly familiarity that keeps the customers coming back year after year.

They say the In-Between has always maintained its high standards when it comes to sandwich making and customer service; that's important in Gainesville where there's stiff competition for the deli dollar.

"You see all kinds of people and I've watched kids grow up that could not peep over the counter; now they're all grown up and married and come in their their children," Rebecca Demore said.

"It's just a fun place."

The In-Between Delicatessen , like Green's Grocery, which we profiled Monday and Riverside Pharmacy, which we'll look at Wednesday, continues to thrive despite the hugh influx of new supermarkets and chain sandwich shops and drug stores because, as Rebecca Demore said, they know their customers and their likes and dislikes.
