New striping emphasizes intersection safety

GAINESVILLE - Hoping to reduce the number of accidents and bottlenecks at intersections, the state Department of Transportation is placing special striping along Georgia 400 and Georgia 365.

Work this week is being done on Georgia 400 from Dahlonega to Cumming. Next week, DOT crews will tackle the crossroads on 365 from Rabbittown to Toccoa.

DOT's Teri Pope says hopefully the striping will reduce the number of vehicles that have been pulling into the median breaks and creating safety hazards. Pope says its not uncommon for cars to line up three and four abreast in the median cut, some with their front or rear-ends sticking out into the traffic lanes.

"The additional striping work focuses the medians at each intersection. We will add dashed lines to define the area you can use to wait in as you cross the road. New yield bars with the yield symbol will be added to the median reminding you who has the right of way. Some work will occur at each left turn lane too. We will widen the dashed lines between the through lanes and left turn lanes to define the left turn lane from the through lanes."

Pope added the new striping will all be thermoplastic - a new material that won't fade and is easier to see in low light.

In addition to Georgia 365 and Georgia 400, similar work is planned this spring on State Route 316 in Gwinnett, Barrow and Oconee counties and U.S. 78 in Gwinnett.

Pope says the new markings will be enforceable by law enforcement officers just as any other roadway markings are but DOT can't dictate that motorists be cited.

It's expected to take one week to complete work on each road.
