Vietnam memorial planned

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Twenty-two soldiers and Marines from Hall County died in the Vietnam War - and soon there may be a permanent memorial to them in Gainesville.

Efforts are underway to raise money for a memorial similar to the one in Washington.

It would be located in Rock Creek Park, across from the downtown library, and contain the names of each of those from Hall County who died in Vietnam.

James Brown of the Hall County Chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America says work has already begun on the memorial and it's supposed to be in place by Memorial Day weekend. A dedication is scheduled at 2:30 Sunday May 27. Brown says more than $17,000 is needed for the project. Of that, about $10,000 has been raised.

A major fundraiser is planned all day April 14 - a car show on the north campus of Free Chapel on McEver Road Extension.
