City council expected to consider dog chain ordinance

GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Mayor Bob Hamrick said he expects City Council to consider a city ban on chaining dogs when it meets Tuesday.

Council heard an appeal several weeks ago from Humane Society of Hall County Director Rick Aiken urging Council to adopt an ordinance that prohibits the practice. Hamrick said Thursday that since then, council members have reviewed ordinances from other cities.

"We have looked at those and the city manager says he will have a suggested ordinance for us to consider," Hamrick said.

Hamrick said Council also heard from several citizens concerned about the effect of chains on dogs; Aiken said chaining results in neglect and the abused dogs become hostile.
