Butt cans coming to downtown Gainesville

GAINESVILLE - Keep Hall Beautiful plans to place cigarette butt cans around downtown Gainesville.

A $2,500 grant from Keep America Beautiful will fund the pilot project, which may be expanded to include other parts of Hall County, according to Marsha Fletcher, executive director of Keep Hall Beautiful.

Fletcher says the grant will allow them to put up cans in which smokers can park their butts. The cans will go in "places where people start to go inside, where they can't smoke," said Fletcher. "So they'll get rid of their cigarettes and packaging outside the door."

There'll be five of those cans to start. The first goes up next week.
