By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - The Hall County Home Development Resources has been awarded a $3,500 grant by the Jackson EMC Foundation to help renovate the home of a disabled Vietnam veteran.

The non-profit organization provides housing rehabilitation and down payment assistance to low and moderate-income Hall County residents. A partnership between residents, local governments, local lending institutions, non-profit housing organizations, neighborhood associations, private property owners, service organizations and local businesses, Home Development Resources helps improve residents' quality of life and revitalizes neighborhoods. Since 2005, the organization has rehabilitated the homes of 18 families and provided down payment assistance to 186 other families.

The Vietnam veteran has had numerous strokes. He is living on a low fixed income in a deteriorated home that is unsafe and unsanitary.

Foundation grants are funded through the Operation Round Up program, which rounds up participating members' monthly electric to the next dollar amount, with an average contribution of $6 per year. Currently, 90 percent of Jackson EMC's members participate in the Round Up program. Since its 2005 introduction, the Jackson EMC Foundation has awarded more than $2 million through 169 grants to organizations and 78 grants to individuals.
