A chicken pie Saturday at Wauka Mountain School

GAINESVILLE - It was time again Saturday for a Hall County tradition; February is the month for Presidents Day, Valentines Day, and the annual Chicken Pie Supper at Wauka Mountain Elementary School in North Hall County.

About 3,000 pounds of chicken started becoming chicken pie before dawn in the school kitchen according to head pie maker and PTO vice president Christy Jones.

"Now it's time to serve it," Jones said. "There's a steady flow of people coming in to eat here or have takeout."

There's always plenty of pie, plenty of pie eaters, about three thousand last year, and this being an election year, it's a place for office seekers to see and be seen.

Jones said the pie supper goes back 83 years.

"I have grandparents who can remember when their parents did this and at that time they brought from home and all came here and ate together," she said. "Things have changed, we make the pies here now, but it's still a great tradition."

With money raised from all that pie, the PTO plans to buy new playground equipment for the school.
