Latter Day Saints building new Flowery Branch Church

FLOWERY BRANCH - Around 60 church members and public officials gathered for the official groundbreaking of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to serve Flowery Branch Saturday.

Site preparation is well underway, but Northeast Georgia church leader Gary Neidfeldt could not resist tossing at least one shovel full of dirt even though earth movers have already done much of the work.

"It's a brand new church, it's going to be a new congregation and will be the fourth congregation in Hall County in fact," Neidfeldt said. "It's going to be a good sized structure, typically we build our buildings to ultimately hold two to three congregations."

According to Niedfeldt, the church would meet the needs of a growing South Hall congregation; he expects 300 members with the scheduled opening in January 2009.

Assisting with the groundbreaking with church officials, Flowery Branch Mayor Diane Hirling and two council members, was the oldest member of the church in the area.

Bobbie Gentry, now in her early 80's, became a member in 1937.

Niedfeldt told the assembly that the church has grown significantly since the first Hall County members joined in 1917.
