Gainesville-Hall transit plan draws public comment

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - People who appeared at Tuesday night's transit development plan public meeting at the Georgia Mountains Center told the planners better marketing and a route to serve Gainesville State College would get the Red Rabbit bus system more riders.

Shama Khimani, a student at Gainesville State College, said better transit service to her school was needed now, not three years from now.

"It's still crowded, there's no parking spots and the traffic is really bad," she said. "There are a lot of people who have to take taxis."

A new route with an extension to GSC is still three years away as a recommended service option from the Gainesville Hall Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Better transit service to Gainesville's Hispanic community would get Hall Transit more riders according to Perla Rojas, who also commented at the meeting.

"They should have routes that really target the Hispanic areas because the Hispanics right now are very influenced by taxis," Rojas said.

GHMPO outlined a five year plan that splits and streamlines existing bus routes and creates new ones that eventually would go to GSC, Flowery Branch and metro Atlanta.

Senior transportation planner Srikanth Yamala said that plan is driven by an increasing need for regional mass transit.

"The tremendous growth that south Hall is seeing these days and with increased tendency towards mass transit, that's what this plan is trying to address," Yamala said.
