New Gainesville spelling bee champs

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - The winning word was "languorous," adjective for languor, meaning weariness of body or mind, Tuesday night at the 17th annual spelling bee benefiting the the Gainesville-Hall County Alliance for Literacy.

Nancy Richardson, a member of the Grace Episcopal Church Team Number 7 "Pinch Hitters," spelled languorous correctly to cap the nearly three-hour event which featured some of the toughest words in the English language.

"We argued about whether there was a 'u' in it or not," Richardson said. "I said there was a 'u' and they agreed with me finally, and the 'u' made it."

Joe Williams and Charlene Bird rounded out this year's spelling champs in the event that promotes improving literacy rates among area adults and children while raising money for the alliance.
